Chaplain Department 1890-1901

This unit was first raised on the 17th April 1890 as the Chaplain Department starting with a strength of 10 Honorary Chaplains led by Chaplain 3rd Class, Dean Of Perth, Very Reverend Frederick Goldsmith. By 1893 the strength was

2x 3rd Class Chaplains

3x 4th Class Chaplains

3x Honorary Chaplains

In 1895 Lieutenant Colonel, Right Reverend Chaplain 2nd Class took over and in 1897 the strength of the department was

1x 2nd Class Chaplain

5x 3rd Class Chaplains

7x 4th Class Chaplains

3x Honorary Chaplains

On the 1st July 1903 when all Western Australian units were fully put under federal control the strength of the department was

1x 2nd Class Chaplain

5x 3rd Class Chaplains

11x 4th Class Chaplains

2x Honorary Chaplains

(Promoted to 2nd Class in 1897, Continued to serve in the Australian army until at least 25/10/19 with the rank of Chaplain General. Served in the Great War and received 3 Orders (CMG, OBE, St John), 1 War Medal, 1 Long Service Medal and 1 Honorary Medal.

(Became a 3rd Class in 1893 and continued to serve in the Australian army until at least after 1917 rising to the rank of 1st Class. He was awarded 1 Long Service Medal.)

(Became a Chaplain 3rd class in 1893 continued to serve in the Australian Army until 22/1/10)

Reverend Arthur S Fry (11/10/94-1/7/03)

(Continued to serve in the Australian Army until 1933 having been promoted to Chaplain 1st Class and serving in the Great War. He was awarded 1 War Service Medal and 1 Long Service Medal.)

(Saw service with the 5th WAMI in South Africa as a Captain. Later joined the Australian Army in 1915 to fight in the Great War. In 1921 he was promoted to Chaplain 3rd Class and continued to be in the Army until at least 1926. He was awarded 4 war service medals.)
